Independently tested
It isn’t a claim a manufacturer makes about itself. UL tests the product and decides whether it passes.
New cabinets shouldn’t come with a side of chemical fumes. GREENGUARD Gold is UL’s independent certification for low chemical emissions — one of the strictest indoor-air standards in the world.
GREENGUARD certification is run by UL, the independent safety-science company behind the UL mark on electrical products. Certified products are tested in a lab for what they actually release into the air, then held to emission limits set by the UL 2818 standard. Gold is the stricter of its two levels.

Gold’s limits include extra safety factors for sensitive individuals, like children and older adults.
Gold-certified products are acceptable for use in schools and healthcare facilities — the places that can least afford poor air.
Cabinets are one of the biggest surfaces in a kitchen, and they stay for decades. The finishes, glues and composite panels in cabinetry can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), like formaldehyde, into the air — that “new cabinet smell” is the giveaway.
Today’s homes are sealed tight for energy efficiency, which also means less fresh air to carry those emissions away. Choosing low-emitting cabinets is one of the simplest ways to keep what you breathe at home cleaner. Raising three boys taught us to care about what’s in the air.
Look for the seal as you browse. Every line we sell — certified or not — meets EPA TSCA Title VI and California Air Resources Board formaldehyde standards.

Gold sets stricter emission limits and adds safety factors for sensitive people, which is why it’s the level accepted for schools and healthcare facilities.
